Applying for Federal Flood Disaster Assistance Applying for Federal Flood Disaster Assistance

The federal government has declared Cook County a disaster area due to the flooding that occurred in late July.

More than simply a proclamation from the federal government, this declaration allows residents and businesses that suffered flood damage to apply for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

As such, it is vital that those affected by the flooding are fully aware of steps they need to take to apply for assistance.

The first step is to call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or go online to www.disasterassistance.gov.

For the hearing and speech impaired, please call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).

It is important to note that government disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate you for your entire loss.

Please also visit www.CookCountyHomelandSecurity.org often for important updates on local assistance efforts.

Today’s Taxing News: Tax Collections Down; Out-of-Town Visitors Getting Whacked
There were two tidbits in August 5th headlines that further support my push to fully repeal the Stroger sales tax hike in Cook County.

First, despite rising taxes and fees, tax collections are actually down in the state (again). As the Champaign News-Gazette reports, overall state tax collections are down 9.5% in July.

The reason for this decline? Simple: people are out of work. When they are out of work, their incomes drop (obviously). That leads to a drop in income tax revenues. They also consume less, which leads to a drop in sales taxes. It is for that reason that increasing the income tax and keeping sales taxes high will only further decimate our economy.

If government takes more of the people’s money, it will only cause them to suffer more and spend less. For those individuals who are small business owners, that will also affect job creation.

Pat Quinn and Todd Stroger are wrong: we need less, not more, taxes.

That coincides with another story today that shows that “Chicago is the worst tax city for travelers.” USA Today reports on a new study by the National Business Travel Association:

The study looked at the 50 U.S. cities with the most air passengers. It found that a typical business traveler pays $101.27 in taxes on average for hotel, rental car and meals during a three-day, two-night stay in Chicago— more than in any other city.

So, in other words, our local politicians are doing their best to repel new visitors, tourists and conventioneers from our city. Once again, that won’t result in more tax revenue — it will result in further economic harm that will put our governments deeper in debt.

Not smart. Not smart at all

Local Flood Relief Assistance
“I am pleased that everyone came together and worked to help county residents, especially the elderly. County employees from the Sheriff’s Department, Office of Homeland Security, and my own staff were on hand to survey damage and provide needed assistance. While this was certainly an unfortunate event, it was heartening to see local officials, neighbors and friends helping one another in this time of need.”

Cook County is working with local municipalities to provide assistance to those impacted by the flood. The county is not in a position to provide financial assistance unless the Federal Government declares the impacted areas to be a disaster area.
In order for this to occur, data and evidence must be submitted to substantiate the amount of damage caused by the flooding.

Forms are available from Commissioner Peraica’s Office for individuals to fill out detailing the damage to their home and property. These are to be filled out and returned to the MUNICIPALITY in which they live, and not to the county.

¦Click link (below) to download the data collection questionnaire form to report property damage.

You can also contact our district office via phone at 708-345-5808.

Let’s Keep That Spotlight Shining
It shouldn’t take a media spotlight to force the county’s patronage czars to stop breaking the law.

A week ago, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger’s administration was poised to hire three politically connected job candidates, including the finance chair of Stroger’s election campaign and the wife of a Chicago alderman.

But when county hiring watchdog Mary Robinson started asking questions about the job candidates, the Stroger administration nixed hiring all three, including Ebonie Taylor-Brookins, wife of Ald. Howard Brookins (21st). The alderman backed Stroger in his losing bid for re-election this year, even as many other African-American politicians stood with the eventual winner of the Democratic primary, Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th).

Some people criticize me for my vigilance in publicly calling out instances of corruption and pushing for the media to cover the breaches of trust and tax dollars within county government.

This particular instance shows why — spotlight is the best disinfectant.

That’s why I’m running for re-election to the county board … to continue our efforts to bring about reform by keeping that light on the corrupt and the inept who abuse your tax dollars.

The PANEL: "COOK COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND TAXES"
On Wednesday, July 14th, a business forum panel will assemble at Crystal Sky Banquets, 7941 W. 47th Street in McCook (corner of 47th Street & Joliet Road). The public is invited so candidates running for office can hear what is on the minds of business owners and voters. Citizens can hear what the candidates have to say about taxes.

The PANEL: "COOK COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND TAXES" hosted by Cook County Coalition for Tax Relief. This will be moderated by Andy Shaw, former Chicago Political Reporter and current Executive Director of the Better Government Association. The FIVE Panelists will be Tony Peraica, 16TH District Cook County Commissioner, Sharon Strobek-Eckersall, Cook County Assessor nominee and their opponents.

Also at this same event, you can witness Carol Morse, Cook County Treasurer nominee sign the Illinois Policy Institute's transparency pledge.

Oh… It is been rumored that the democrats have formed the Lyons/McCook Business Associate to partner at this event. (Why would they do that? Hmmmm?)

We need all Republicans to attend this event. It should be an interesting evening.

FYI: Cash bar will be open before and after the panel
